I’ve heard it a million times in the last few months.
Loving your neighbor means ______________.
Just fill in the blank…
- wearing a mask
- not going to church
- getting the vaccine
- supporting the Black Lives Matter organization
- and on and on…
The truth is that this phrase is just the world shaming Christians on social media into its own shallow definition of love.
Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was. He replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” – Matthew 22;36-40
Love of neighbor must be subordinate to love for God. Unfortunately, many Christians are getting it backwards. Shaming people will never produce genuine love.
I think it’s time that phrase be retired permanently.
